2011 SAFETY GOALS
- Continue to communicate with Custom Toolbox Talks. We want to continue adding more topics to our collection of safety issues or concerns. This is an easy, effective way to communicate to our employees.
- Assign someone in-house to spread salt and sand in the winter months. In the past we have outsourced the removal of snow and the spreading of salt. It’s tough to keep up with the winter weather, so we have assigned this duty in-house in order to make this a number one priority on those lovely winter days!
- With the help our employees, we have been notified to repair the old exhaust fan above the burn table. The exhaust included for the burn table works great, but it only runs when the burn table is running. This has already been fixed this year!
- Have every gang box assigned a face shield.
- Having visual reminders on jobs sites to help eliminate a chance for a potential injury or accident. Posting fact sheets on policies we use daily that summarizes the most important facts. These should be reviewed each day. Policies that are involved are LOTO, Confined Space and Fire Entry, but not limited to just those examples.
- Add tool lanyards to our safety inventory, to eliminate a chance of dropping a tool and injuring someone else.
- Decreasing the damage to Climate Engineers fleet of trucks. Reviewing with our employees the rules and policies required when using a company vehicle. Reminding them that they have responsibilities when driving and accessing a company vehicle. Revise our policy so it explains all natures, including how an employee should treat the truck itself.
- Increase early morning activities – reinforcing stretching on all job sites and in the shops daily.
- Improve the PJHA for all jobs, HVAC & Industrial. We are tracking paperwork a different way this year to hopefully help streamline where our weak areas are at and improve the turn-in results.
- Forklift Training will be done for all employees by our in-house trainers (Bill Bohlken and Duane Houser). Bill and Duane are due for training this year. We look forward to incorporating all new regulations and training material.
2010 SAFETY GOALS RECAP
- Tool Box Talks have been a great way to communicate with the shop and field workers. They have been a great feature to get safety information such as reminders, reviews, or notices about incidents that have occurred and ways to prevent them from happening again.
- We worked with Eagleone Safety Solutions on a regular basis. We used them for job sites that required a full time safety representative, and to conduct training seminars, such as the Lock Out Tag Out and Confined Space Training. We also worked with SMCI to train us on OSHA, First Aid, CPR and other required Training. We reviewed the training spreadsheet daily to verify all workers were up to date on their training. We stressed the importance of having the correct training prior to doing the job.
- Forklift Training will be done for all employees by our in-house trainers (Bill Bohlken and Duane Houser). Bill & Duane will get retrained in 2011.
- Updating our safety handbook proves to be an on-going event, especially when adding new programs. In 2010 we "revamped" the safety handbook and continued to update the website. The changes provided a friendlier read for our employees and others that referenced the information. Most of our safety information is now just a click away! We continue this into 2011 to leans towards the "green" way of doing business. We added new programs this year: Bloodborne Pathogens, Environmental Spill Procedures and revised our Hazardous Communications Program.
- The safety committee did a great job expressing issues and bringing up questions regarding safety issues. We encouraged anyone with a safety related issue to attend our monthly meetings. We will have a new safety committee start at our annual Safety Celebration in July 2011
- Pete Watson and Karen Atwater attended the Risk Management Seminar in Chicago. It was a great experience that gave them a lot of ideas they brought back to Climate. These ideas helped add new and fresh ideas that have improved upon on Safety Program. We also received two safety awards through our captive insurance program. The awards were:
Award of Honor - For Outstanding Safety Performance and the Highest Awards Program Points for the Intermediate Member Category in 2009 Certificate of Achievement - For Lost Workday Case Rate, Total Lost Workdays Rate, and Total OSHA Recordable Rate below the Industry Average of NAICS Code 332322 in 2009.
- Project Manager Meetings took place every other month. These meetings allowed us to bring both locations together to express important topics and learn new ways to improve our company. A few topics that were discussed were: Change Orders, RFI and the SMACNA Program
- Foremen’s meetings occurred on a regular basis and have helped us gain input from those in the shop and field. These meetings kept everyone updated on all changes that occurred in Safety and other areas. We started breaking the foreman meetings into smaller groups to get more input from certain areas, then we reviewed with them as a whole.
- We have had the standard eye protection in place for a year now and it has shown a large decrease in eye injuries. By the end of the year we only had one eye injury reported, which was great!
- With the economy the way it was this past year we didn't see too many hire/rehires. All new hires did go through the company's new employee orientation, which included a safety video to inform them of our safety programs and hazards. Hopefully next year we will be able to take advantage of this program more.
- Climate installed “lean processes” which included better housekeeping that helped reduce potential injuries. We still work daily at improving our processes. We look forward to more "lean" processes to take place in 2011
